Millions of  the elderly around the world suffer from a severe lower back pain due to the degeneration of Intervertebral disc (IVD) in the spinal column. We have designed a rapid prototyped silk winding machine using stepper motors of old tape recorder and developed custom-made aligned silk fibrous scaffold with a multilayered lamellar architecture at a low cost and fast speed. These silk scaffolds guide the alignment of cells and deposition of ECM proteins to a stipulated angle in lamellar fashion which provides tensile re-enforcement to withstand the large circumferential tensile stresses during in vivo compression of the intervertebral disc.
